You know how I feel about backups. If you don’t, you can read my posts on backing up your website to become acquainted. And if you’re familiar with my stance, don’t worry. I’m not going to be discussing backing up your website (again). Instead, I’m going to talk about how to backup your computer.
I’d like to think that you’ve heard how important it is to keep your computer backed up, but sadly so many people still aren’t backing up their stuff. Those precious family photos can be gone in an instant. Don’t you want to make sure that doesn’t happen?
Luckily with a little bit of effort, you can quickly and easily make sure your data is backed up. Here’s how to make it happen.
Automate The Backup Process
The best backup is one that actually happens. In order to ensure your data won’t disappear in a flash, your best bet is to automate the process. There are a ton of services out there, such as CrashPlan, Backblaze, Carbonite, and Mozy. Simply set it up and they work in the background to make sure your data is backed up to the cloud.
I know you’re thinking “ugh, another thing I have to pay for.” But would you rather pay $50-$60 a year for piece of mind or would you rather lose all your family photos and business documents? It’s definitely a worthwhile expense in my book.
If you have a Mac, you have a free option: Time Machine. Time Machine comes with every Mac and is easy to setup. All that it requires is an external drive and you can be backing up your Mac in minutes.
Multiple Backups, Multiple Locations
One backup is better than none, but two is even better. Think about it. If that one backup is corrupt and you need it, then are your files really backed up? Nope. That’s why it’s important to backup to multiple locations. And no, I’m not talking about backing up to two external drives. After all, what happens if your house catches fire? Bye bye backups. That’s why it’s super important to backup to multiple locations. If you use CrashPlan, Backblaze, Carbonite, or Mozy, your data is backed up to the cloud, so that’s one location down. And if you have a Mac, you’re backing up locally. That’s two. If you don’t have a Mac, CrashPlan allows you to backup to an external drive.
The Best Backup Solution
The best backup solution is one that you can rely on should the worst happen. By creating multiple backups to multiple locations automatically, your data should be safe from whatever life throws at you. Don’t wait for your hard drive to fail or an accident to happen. Take action now and you’ll prevent all the headaches that come with losing your data.
