Two weeks ago I shared how using a daily schedule allows me to get more done in a day. That was only part of my time management process. I have another secret weapon that I use to make sure I’m staying focused: The Pomodoro Technique.
The Pomodoro Technique utilizes short, timed bursts of work, followed by a short break. This allows you to focus on the task at hand and ensures that you get breaks so you don’t get burnt out.
As you can see by looking at my daily schedule, everything is scheduled in blocks no smaller than half an hour. This is so that I can plan my day with Pomodoros. As soon as 10am hits, I break out my favorite Pomodoro app and dive right into working. I work for 25 minutes, followed by a 5 minute break, which equals one Pomodoro. I’ll complete 4 Pomodoros and follow it with a half hour or longer break.
While having a daily schedule helps immensely, it’s really the addition of working for timed bursts that really keeps me on track. When the timer is going, I know I have to focus and get stuff done.
Interested in using The Pomodoro Technique yourself? You can read more about it on the official website. Below is a list of timer websites and apps that you can use to break your work into Pomodoros:
- 30/30 (iOS + my favorite!)
- Tomato Timer (online)
- Pomodoro Timer (iOS)
- Focus Booster (Windows + Mac)
- ClearFocus (Android)
